Leveraging adversity into vibrancy

The viability of this small town nestled on the Mississippi River was threatened by the construction of a new four lane bridge that would touch down in the center of downtown.    The bridge relocation provided an opportunity to reclaim the small town character that had been diluted through conventional suburban development, by strategically placing businesses to shape a more vibrant, human scaled experience.

The Framework Plan weaves together a network of streets, open spaces, and land uses in a compact pattern to foster a connected and livable community.

In his built work for the town, Geoff artfully reinforced Sauk Rapid's local geology, historical commerce, and identity as a river town by using raw granite blocks and pervious paving counterbalanced by lush plantings and sinuous site elements.

Geoff’s ability to add clarity to the very complex process of rebuilding Downtown Sauk Rapids was an invaluable key in defining our strategic vision and reinventing our identity. In a time of regional decline our town has harnessed continued growth in large part because of the quality of place that Geoff rigorously helped us define from the master plan to the details. We like to refer to Sauk Rapids as “the town that Geoff built.
