Geoff teamed with bronze sculptors, Koh Varilla, to win this national design competition. More than simple recognition of the man, the Humphrey Memorial is laced with evocative symbolism, touching visitors on a variety of levels, accommodating both the casual lunchtime viewer and the Humphrey historian. The memorial embodies Humphrey’s accessible nature and commitment to the common man. It focuses on communicating three key concepts: the spirit of Hubert H. Humphrey, a literal and spatial historical interpretation, and the future relevance of his humanitarian ideals.

A curved granite wall gradually rises toward the capital, tracing and building on Humphrey's achievements and notable quotations as it welcomes, embraces and informs visitors. The site relies heavily on Carnelian granite from South Dakota and Rockville granite from Central Minnesota, which together reference Humphrey’s rural roots and boyhood and adult home states.

The oval plaza is oriented along a visual axis linking the repository of Minnesota’s past (the Minnesota History Center) and the responsibility for its future (the State Capitol). Standing at the edge of the axis is a 7 foot likeness of Humphrey himself. The statue stands on a granite seat pedestal, inviting visitors to come together in conversation, debate, and education.
